The film, based on DC Comics characters, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker and provides a possible origin story for the character. Set init follows Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian whose descent into insanity and nihilism inspires a violent counter-cultural revolution against the wealthy in a decaying Gotham City. Joker was produced by Warner Bros.
Phillips conceived Joker in and wrote the script with Silver throughout The two were inspired by s character studies and the films of Martin Scorsese particularly Taxi Driver and The King of Comedywho was initially attached to the project as a producer.
The graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke was the basis for the film's premise, but Phillips and Silver otherwise did not look to specific comics for inspiration. Phoenix became attached in February and was cast that July, while the majority of the cast signed on by August. Joker is the first live-action theatrical Batman film to receive an R-rating from the Motion Picture Association of Americadue to its violent and disturbing content.
The film polarized critics; while it was highly praised for Phoenix's performance, the musical score, cinematography and production values, it was met with mixed reception concerning Phillips' screenplay and direction.
The film's dark tone, portrayal of mental illness, and handling of violence divided opinion and also generated concerns of inspiring real-world violence; the movie theater where the Aurora, Colorado mass shooting occurred during a screening of The Dark Knight Rises refused to show it.
Joker received numerous accolades. Inparty clown and aspiring stand-up comedian Arthur Fleck lives with his mother, Penny, in Gotham City. Gotham is rife with crime and unemployment, leaving swathes of the population disenfranchised and impoverished. Arthur suffers from a medical disorder that causes him to laugh at inappropriate times; he depends on social services for medication.
After a gang of delinquents attacks Arthur in an alley, his co-worker, Randall, gives him a gun for protection. Arthur meets his neighbor, single mother Sophie Dumond, and invites her to his upcoming stand-up routine at a nightclub. While entertaining at a children's hospital, Arthur's gun falls out of his pocket. Randall lies to management that Arthur bought the gun himself and Arthur is fired.
On the subway, still in his clown makeup, Arthur is beaten by three drunken Wayne Enterprises businessmen; he shoots two in self-defense and executes the third. The murders are condemned by billionaire mayoral candidate Thomas Waynewho calls those envious of more successful people "clowns. Funding cuts shutter the social service program, leaving Arthur without his medication.
All this results in Arthur having a mental breakdown, leading him to knock on Sophie's door and passionately kiss her, leading to a budding relationship. Sophie attends Arthur's stand-up routine, which goes poorly; he laughs uncontrollably and has difficulty delivering his jokes. Popular talk show host Murray Franklin mocks Arthur by showing clips from the comedy routine on his show.

Following a visit from two Gotham City Police Department detectives investigating Arthur's involvement in the train murders, Penny suffers a stroke and is hospitalized.
At a public event, Arthur confronts Thomas, who tells him that Penny is delusional and not his biological mother.
In denial, Arthur visits Arkham State Hospital and steals Penny's case file; the file says Penny adopted Arthur as a baby and allowed her abusive boyfriend to harm them both. However, Penny says that Thomas used his influence to fabricate the adoption to hide their affair. Distraught, Arthur returns home and enters Sophie's apartment unannounced.
Frightened, Sophie tells him to leave and their previous encounters are revealed to be Arthur's delusions. The following day, Arthur smothers Penny with a pillow at the hospital. Arthur is invited to appear on Murray's show due to the unexpected popularity of his comedy routine's clips.

Its star, Joaquin Phoenix, has been singled out as a surefire Oscar nominee. Some people, including a few rank-and-file employees on the Warner Bros. Relatives and friends of those killed during the movie theater massacre in Aurora, Colo. Warner Bros. It was very much the intention, however, to make an audacious, boundary-pushing movie — one that could cut through the deluge of Netflix-Amazon-YouTube streaming content and get people out to movie theaters to buy tickets.
Phillips recently recalled in an interview with The Wrap, an entertainment news site. In particular, Mr. Phillips wanted to give the Joker a new back story, one that ended up making the character strikingly similar to disturbed young men who were perpetrating mass killings in real life, including the one who carried out the Aurora massacre.
In the comics, the villain falls into a vat of chemicals and comes out a disfigured maniac. It had been widely reported at the time of the Aurora massacre that the gunman, whose hair was dyed reddish orange, had told the police that he was the Joker. That account was later debunkedbut the character was still associated with the episode in the public consciousness. How did Mr. Phillips possibly expect the studio to buy into his idea?
But they gave him permission to proceed with a script. The discussion with Mr. Phillips came as Warner Bros.
Marvel was soaring by using a lighthearted formula while Warner Bros. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Maybe part of the way forward for Warner Bros. Still, there was division among the ranks, the people said. Other senior executives were disconcerted by the level of violence and ultra-bleak tone. By the time Warner Bros.
Fears about safety in public spaces had increased after a rash of mass shootings, including one at a California agricultural festival and one at a Walmart that left 22 dead.

But the company did take measures to mitigate the risk.CNN "Joker" might bring to mind a caped crusader, but it's another vigilante, "Taxi Driver's" Travis Bickle, who provides the movie's spiritual sire.
Joaquin Phoenix's electric, disturbing performance is thus dogged by history and questions about the "why" of it all -- that is, a Joker without Batman -- an answer that isn't really in the cards.

More Videos Joaquin Phoenix joins actors who've played the Joker There is a constituency eager to blame Hollywood for contributing to societal ills that includes plenty of dishonest brokers. That said, the Joker character and "Taxi Driver" both come with unwelcome asterisks -- the first in its association with the mass shooting in Aurora, Col.
Director Todd Phillips is best known for "The Hangover" trilogy, and has seemingly overcompensated for his comedy roots by delivering a movie virtually devoid of humor. While that's understandable given the context, the unrelenting gloom and prevailing sense of dread becomes almost oppressive, perhaps especially for those who aren't steeped in the mythology.
At the risk of stating the obvious, this R-rated film is not for children, although a parade of related Halloween costumes seems sadly inevitable. Ultimately, "Joker" is about the making of a monster, told in a manner that seeks to evoke empathy without rooting for him -- a fine line, underscoring a level of ambition beyond what's usually associated with comic-book-adjacent fare. When the movie opens, Arthur is working as a part-time clown, and immediately brutally beaten up.
Joaquin Phoenix stars as Joker in a new film from Warner Bros. Not that craziness is a complete stranger to Arthur's life, living as he does with his mother Frances Conroy in a dingy apartment, while harboring wince-inducing dreams of becoming a standup comedian.
Arthur's pursuit of happiness comes with several impediments, including a condition that causes him to laugh uncontrollably at inappropriate moments. Yet it's another random act of violence that kicks the story into motion, unleashing resentments bubbling not just within the man but beneath the surface of this dystopian society.
There is a demonstrable appetite for R-rated material with comic-book ties, although the more popular entries within that category, "Deadpool" and "Logan," are very different animals than this one. The Joker clearly harbors a singular place in Batman lore; still, it's not too much to ask -- and more than just being a scold -- for justification of an exercise that places such a villain front and center, especially when there is so little light or goodness to balance the darkness. Phoenix's live-wire work alone makes "Joker" an intriguing film, if one that has been conspicuously overpraised amid the irrational exuberance of film festivals.
Advance criticism -- including an expression of concern by the Aurora families -- has yielded pleas from those associated with the film to watch and judge on its merits, which is a reasonable request. Having done so, the movie produces a split verdict -- eliciting admiration for parts of what "Joker" achieves, without allaying questions about the value, and wisdom, of opening this deck.
As for anyone expressing surprise that the movie has triggered controversy about its potential impact, to that reaction, at least, it's hard to keep a straight face.
